Iowa DNR News
Environmental Services Division

For immediate release Oct. 22, 2007
BOILING WATER RECOMMENDED IN OTO

MEDIA CONTACT: Lois Benson at (712) 262-4177.

OTO – A few homes and one business in Oto have been told they should boil their water after a substantial leak was discovered Monday morning.

The affected area is on First Avenue and a small area on Second Avenue.

The DNR recommends that people using water in this area should boil the water for one minute before using it for drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth or other consumptive use. Boiling kills bacteria that could be in the water.

This is a precautionary recommendation until water samples can be analyzed to see if bacteria are present.

The leak appears to be in a very limited area. However, the city is losing more water per day than it normally produces, causing a substantial drop in water pressure. Whenever water pressure drops, it is possible for bacteria to enter the water supply.

The city is trying to locate and repair the leak. Once repaired, the city will take samples and flush the lines. The city will notify people in the affected area once results are available and also when the advisory is lifted.

More information is available on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.
