Iowa City Protest Against Genetically Modified Crops

When: Wednesday, September 20, 2000

Noon until 1 p.m., rain or shine.

  Rally and speakers

Where: Iowa Memorial Union, east side of building

  Madison Street, Iowa City

Why: The Iowa Biotech Association (IBA)is holding a
conference at the Union entitled "Growing Biotechnology Companies in
Iowa." Governor Vilsack will join executives from DuPont,
Monsanto, and other companies engaged in genetic engineering of crops to
encourage more of this type of industry in Iowa. IBA works against
labeling of genetically modified foods.

Genetically modified crops such as corn, soybeans, potatoes, and cotton
have not been proven safe, and in fact are implicated in an increasing
number of human and environmental health risks. Europe is rejecting
these foods; however, in the US, industry pressure has kept consumers
from having access to the labeling that would enable them to avoid
altered foods. For more information, please check the Organic Consumers
Association web site at www.purefood.org

Who: Sponsors include the Organic Consumers Association, the
Iowa City area group of the Sierra Club, and the Green Party.
