The Ancient Forest Roadshow is off and running. This educational tour was
organized by Northwest Ecosystem Alliance and supported by many local and
national conservation organizations including Sierra Club. The goal of the Road Show
is to educate and inform the American public about the impact of Bush
administration timber policies, including the so called Healthy Forest Restoration Act
that the President championed, on our nation's forests. The hope is to give
the public the opportunity to actually touch a piece of their heritage and to
understand that this is their living history.

Two crews traveling in reconditioned, brightly painted Park and Ride buses,
and pulling a flat bed trailer carrying an upright mounted crosscut slice from
an ancient tree felled on public land in Oregon, are traveling to over 33
states this summer.  Each tour will have experienced activists on board that will
drive cross-country to municipal centers with displays, presentations, and
current information to help citizens take action on policies and timber sales
affecting public lands.

Dubbed "The Doug," it was once a tall Douglas fir living in an ancient forest
in western Oregon. Felled on July 10, 2002, as part of the "Berry Patch"
timber sale on the Willamette National Forest, this particular sale clearcut
logged 99 acres of big old growth timber, enough to fill more than a thousand log
trucks. Douglas fir is the second tallest tree species in America. The tree our
Doug came from was more than 200 feet tall, and 6 and half feet in diameter.
This tree was 420 years old when it was cut down.

I am committed to spending at least two weeks on the Tour in the upper
midwest and into the northeast possibly as far as Vermont. At this time I haven't
heard exactly when or where I will meet up with the Tour.
