More to Recycling Than Cans, Bottles and Newspapers

Des Moines --- Most people recycle cans, bottles and newspapers, but there
is much more that could be reused. Comments from Dewayne Johnson, executive
director of the Iowa Recycling Association.

Suggested script: EVERY YEAR, TONS OF CANS, PLASTIC BOTTLES AND NEWSPAPERS
ARE RECYCLED IN IOWA, BUT IT'S ONLY A FRACTION OF WHAT COULD BE RECYCLED.
FOR EXAMPLE, A MAJORITY OF OLD CELL PHONES THAT COULD BE RECYCLED ARE THROWN
AWAY. DEWAYNE JOHNSON WITH THE IOWA RECYCLING ASSOCIATION SAYS EVERYTHING
FROM ELECTRONICS TO CLOTHES QUALIFIES FOR RECYCLING.
Actuality Cut #50%%ID%% (TRT: 20) "There is more to recycling than just
paper, plastic and glass. There are cell phone recycling programs out there,
there are computer recycling programs out there. There are places that will
take clothing and will either resell it or will bail it and make other, you
know, recycle the cotton and make new clothes out of it."

JOHNSON SAYS IF THE BOTTLE BILL WERE EXPANDED, EVEN MORE ITEMS COULD BE
SAVED FROM THE LANDFILL.

Actuality Cut #51%%ID%% (TRT: 15) "If we just captured the water bottles
that are being thrown away, we could make a pretty good-sized dent. And we
know how to capture those containers because the bottle bill is very
effective in capturing the ones with the deposit."

Suggested tag: JOHNSON SAYS RECYCLING WORKS BEST WHEN IT IS EASY AND
CONVENIENT. HE SAYS THAT IS WHY CURBSIDE RECYCLING IS SO POPULAR.
