NOTE TO EDITORS: This is an additional update to the previously reported
bypasses that occurred across the state after heavy rainfall the weekend of
May 5, 2007. The original news release and more information about bypasses

DES MOINES – The following communities reported wastewater discharges or
provided updates on previously reported discharges to the DNR on Tuesday
afternoon:
Adair County
Greenfield: Wastewater is overflowing via an emergency discharge pipe from
the equalization basin at the City of Greenfield’s treatment plant. The
wastewater began discharging to Marvel Creek, which flows into the Thompson
River, at 11 a.m. Monday. The city estimates the discharge may stop sometime
Wednesday, with a total of 740,000 gallons of wastewater discharged.
Crawford County
Schleswig (update): The City of Schleswig stopped discharging wastewater
from its treatment system to the Little Branch of the Soldier River Tuesday
at noon. The bypass began at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Guthrie County
Stuart: The City of Stuart is bypassing partially treated wastewater from
its treatment plant to the Middle and South Raccoon Rivers. The bypass began
at 10:30 a.m. Sunday when the plant could not keep up with increased flows.
The city is in the design phase of improvements to its wastewater treatment
plant.
Monona County
Onawa: The City of Onawa began discharging wastewater to the Missouri River
May 5. The city estimates it may be able to stop discharging sometime
Tuesday and may discharge a total of up to 2.5 million gallons of
wastewater.
Polk County:
Des Moines: Des Moines Public Works reported a wastewater discharge to
Grays Lake that began sometime Tuesday morning and ended around 1:45 p.m.
The wastewater discharged at a rate of 5 to 10 gallons per minute.
Taylor County
Lenox: The City of Lenox began discharging wastewater to the West Branch 102
River around 7 a.m. Monday from a lift station and manhole. The lift station
stopped discharging at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Union County
Creston: The City of Creston began discharging wastewater to the Platte
River at 9:50 a.m. Monday from overflowing manholes. The city stopped
discharging from the manholes at 3 a.m. Tuesday, with a total of 327,100
gallons discharged. As its equalization basin at the treatment plant filled
up quickly from excess flows, the city began discharging from the basin to
the river Monday afternoon. The basin is discharging at a rate of 5.4
million gallons per day.
