Hi from Joyce....this article on yesterday's Fresh Air from NPR was worth
listening to....(I don't always listen to this program often..some of her
stuff is too strange..but this was worth it.)
You can listen to it if you know how or request the book at
your library. There is a short description below. It explains how more
than two thousand million and billionaires pay no taxes and you and your
kids pay too much. I think study clubs ought to read and study this. It
is amazing and disturbing. Who writes the tax laws....lawyers who work
for the rich.
Listen to Journalist David Cay Johnston at

http://freshair.npr.org/day_fa.jhtml?display=day&todayDate=01/07/2004

"He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his investigative reporting in
The New York Times. His new book is Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign
to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich -- and Cheat Everybody
Else. Johnston was hired by the Times to cover taxes and he approached it
like an ongoing investigation. In his new book he writes, "I was
especially surprised to find that some of the biggest tax breaks for the
rich are not even in the tax code, and that the IRS was completely
unaware of many widely used tax fraud schemes. But what surprised me more
than anything was the realization that our tax system now levies the
poor, the middle class and even the upper middle class to subsidize the
rich." Joyce Naffier in Ankeny
PS the title is "Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax
System to Benefit the Super Rich - and Cheat Everybody Else"
by David Cay Johnston
