On the nomination of Henry Paulson to Treasury Secretary
Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director
San Francisco: In reaction to the nomination of Goldman-Sachs CEO, Henry
Paulson, to U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, the Sierra Club issues the
following statement from Executive Director, Carl Pope.
"It isn't every day that the Sierra Club finds itself welcoming a
nomination to George W. Bush's cabinet while ultra-conservatives decry the
move. But on issues like global warming, Hank Paulson appears to favor
managing risk rather than cooking the books. Too often the Bush
administration approach to global warming has been the opposite.
"Given Mr. Paulson's well-known passion for environmental issues, and the
policies Goldman-Sachs has made on environmental issues under his
leadership, we are hopeful that he will be able to carry those values and
principles into the administration. It is heartening that someone of Mr.
Paulson's stature in the financial world is willing to say that immediate
action must be taken to combat global warming, We would hope that the
Bush administration would understand Mr. Paulson's view that global warming
must be addressed for both environmental, and economic reasons.
Unfortunately, so far the administration has turned a deaf ear to science,
and previous cabinet level officials on global warming. While President
Bush has admitted that the earth is warming and diagnosed America's oil
addiction, he has done nothing to curb either of these problems."
