GATHERING SCHEDULED TO HELP PROTECT IOWA'S EDDYVILLE DUNES

Friday, November 13, 1998, 12:00 P.M.

Concerned Iowans and members of the Sierra Club will gather in front of
the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) in Ames on Friday, November
13, 1998, at 12 p.m. to express concern about a proposed IDOT road project
that threatens the Eddyville Dunes.

Located near Eddyville in southeastern Iowa, the Eddyville Dunes are a
unique landform containing a rare sandhill prairie community and
adjacent wetlands. The natural area is home to several endangered and
threatened plant and animal species as well as a complex water system.

A speaker will give a brief presentation about the threat to
the Eddyville Dunes and IDOT's responsibility for obeying state and
federal laws that govern environmental protection.

The IDOT office is located at the intersections of Lincoln Way and Grand
Avenue in Ames. Parking is available at the IDOT visitor parking lot
located east and a little bit south of the building. Parking is also
available in surrounding parking lots, and on Oak Avenue, streets off Oak
Avenue and streets north of Lincoln Way.

The event will be held rain or shine.

A press packet will be available at the gathering.
