THE APPLICATION PERIOD FOR THE SAFE DRINKING WATER TASK FORCE HAS BEEN
EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 15, 2002

PLEASE CONSIDER APPLYING!

The Sierra Club's Water Committee is seeking to fill four vacancies on the
Sierra Club's Safe Drinking Water Task Force (SDWTF). We are especially
interested in candidates with experience, expertise, and/or strong
interest/concern in the following areas:

Hydro-geology or Hydro-ecology; broadening knowledge and support within
the Sierra Club for strengthening and enforcing the Safe Drinking Water
Act (SDWA); public health implications of issues such as wastewater
technologies, microbiology, toxics, solid waste; water conservation
strategies and devices; and the overarching need for adopting and
asserting "The Precautionary Principle" for all decisions affecting
water quality and safety.

Service on the SDWTF requires a commitment of time and energy.
Activists who are already over-committed--as many of our best leaders
are--may have to give up some of their current commitments in order to
serve effectively as a task force member.

For a better idea of the work we do, please review the description of the
SDWTF and the list of qualifications for appointment that precede the
application form below. Applicants must be current Sierra Club members.

Selection of a new committee member will be based on several criteria,
including: enthusiasm for safe drinking water activism; relevant areas of
interest and/or expertise; location; willingness to help create a
far-reaching
program of safe drinking water activism in the Sierra Club; commitment to
remain active on the task force for at least two years; and the ability to
communicate effectively orally and electronically.

Appointments to the Committee are made by the Water Committee, based on
applications and phone interviews with prospective candidates. If you are
interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions completely.
We are only accepting self-nominations. If you know of others you think
may have an interest in serving on the SDWTF, please, pass this
announcement
on to them.

Sierra Club of Canada members are not eligible to apply. Please contact
Sierra Club Canada at [log in to unmask] for information on Canadian
participation in these committees.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS: November 15, 2002

A copy of the completed application should be sent (email preferred) to
these members of the Search Committee:

SAFE DRINKING WATER TASK FORCE

The Safe Drinking Water Task Force is a subentity of the Water
Committee, one of five national Sierra Club issue committees that report to
and advise the Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST). The other
committees are: Air, Environmental Justice, Waste, and Corporate
Accountability. Strategy Teams appoint issue committees, supervise their
budgets, and assist them in developing and carrying out their work plans.

The SDWTF is responsible for providing support and guidance to Club
activists at all levels who are attempting to deal with issues affecting
Safe Drinking Water, for encouraging better communication among SDW
advocates both inside and outside of the Club, and for helping to shape
national Club policies and positions that have implications toward
protecting drinking water safety (overcoming on-going threats).

The SDWTF is in its initial startup phase and has only one member, the
Chair, John Glenn.

For more information on serving as part of the SDWTF, please feel free to
contact us. It would be helpful for any applicant to review the
conservation policies relating To Clean Water, available on the Sierra
Club website (www.sierraclub.org; On the Home Page, search:
Conservation Policy).

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

We seek members who are currently dealing with threats to any source of
drinking water, whether surface or underground, and those activists who are
having problems getting agencies to perform their duty to enforce laws,
rules or regulations for protecting water.

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening or weekends) are required.
Also, ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences is helpful.
If it is official SDWTF business, members will be reimbursed for travel and
lodging expenses, as well as telephone calls.

In evaluating applications, the Water Committee strives to achieve
diversity in geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections
with grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter
or Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (which means
a demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to
Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more
effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of
activists at all levels.
