TIPPING THE SCALES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

An
Online University-Style Learning Experience

”Tipping the Scales for Environmental Justice” is for Sierra Club activists
(or
potential activists) who are concerned about the inter-related
environmental and social justice issues that face many of America's
communities.

The mission of the course is to engage in dialogue, deepen our understanding
of the issues
facing many of our country’s poorest communities, and begin to learn how to
take effective action.

APPLY NOW for May 28th to July 2nd Session (go to Clubhouse/Training
http://mitchell.sierraclub.org/go/training/)

Course Technology
Note:  This course is best-viewed using a high-speed (Cable-modem, DSL, or
Network) connection to the internet.  Those with a dial-up connection may
still participate, but may need to access alternate computers for some of
the multimedia presentations.

During the course, you will interact with professional Sierra Club
Environmental Justice
activists, learning peers, and content in a variety of mediums.  You will
gain compelling insight into the connections between environmental
pollution, poverty, racism, and class inequity.  You
will develop your understanding of the EJ issues in your own area, and the
Sierra Club resources that can help address them.

Together, we will explore the connections between environmental quality and
social
justice.  We’ll create a community of learners, in which all can contribute
insight, share experience, and build a network of peers to carry us forward
as we work toward environmental justice.  We will:

Review the Sierra Club's Principles of Environmental Justice, and apply
them to local and
national issues
Familiarize ourselves with the role of environmental justice in the
Sierra Club's mission and
activities
Explore the relationship between race, class, and environmental injustice
Analyze and describe the social justice dimensions of environmental
issues for the communities that are impacted
Analyze successful Sierra Club Environmental Justice initiatives to learn
what led to success
Review Executive Order 12898 so that we understand and can describe its
mandates

Please note that your participation will take at least two hours a week, and
possibly four or more hours.  Be prepared to make that commitment, so that
you and your classmates can obtain the full benefits.

 Your course facilitators,

    Rita Harris

    Bill Price
