Senator Kyl has offered an amendment to S.517 that would deny
all Americans the benefits of clean energy. The Kyl amendment would
strip the 10% renewable energy standard in the Daschle-Bingaman bill
and replace it with a voluntary provision that merely requires states
to consider offering customers green power.
There would be no guarantee that even one additional kilowatt-hour of
clean renewable energy be generated under this scheme.
In addition, under the Kyl amendment the definition of "green power"
is defined so loosely that it could include electricity generated by
dangerous nuclear or dirty coal-fired power plants, not clean wind or
solar.
Consumers could be tricked into being charged more for "green
energy," when in fact they are getting dirty fossil fuels or
nuclear-generated power.
The Kyl amendment is a special interest ploy to trick consumers and
deny all Americans the benefits of truly clean renewable energy.
Senator Grassley has not made a commitment on this issue. Please call him at
(202) 224-3121 and ask him to vote against the Kyl amendment.
