CALLING ALL ADVOCATES!!
MIDWEST ALASKA WILDERNESS WEEKEND
In case you hadn't heard - the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is

under attack! But thanks to the work of citizens like you, the Arctic
drilling provision in this year's Congressional Budget Resolution was
defeated - but our work has just begun! Already, Big Oil's powerful
Congressional allies are making other attempts to plunder public lands
for
private profit. Help from advocates like you are needed to protect the
Arctic Refuge!

What can you do? Join other like-minded individuals from the Midwest for

the Arctic Refuge Advocacy and Leadership Workshop!

When: May 5 - 7, 2000
Where: Beautiful Indiana Dunes Environmental Living Ctr, Chesterton, IN

What: The 2-day training will teach participants advocacy and media
skills
applicable to any campaign, provide background on the campaign to
protect
ANWR, give participants a chance to network w/others from the region,
and
help people develop a local strategy to protect the Arctic Refuge. Lots
of
fun, too!

Cost: Entire weekend, only $20, which covers 2 nights' at the
Environmental
Ctr, meals, workshops, and materials.

To Register: Contact Bruce Kiracofe, Midwest Field Organizer, Alaska
Wilderness League at (740)427-4456 or [log in to unmask] ASAP to
reserve
a spot (space is limited). The training is available to activists from
OH,
IL, IN, MI, and WI.

Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL), a conservative who strongly opposed the
Arctic drilling plan, predicted that global oil production would rise
and
gas prices go down w/out intervention by Congress to allow drilling.
"That
pristine wilderness and ecosystem are far more valuable to Americans
than
the oil that lies underneath," said Fitzgerald.

"We will continue efforts to open the coastal plain, placing another
bill
in the Republican energy package," US Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-AK) said.
Fitzgerald predicted defeat for any measure authorizing outright
drilling
in the wildlife refuge.' - Chicago Trib. article 4/15/00
