Environmentally Friendly Gardening - Organic Growing Call In Program
Thursday, November 8th at 10 am. - on 910 AM, WSUI Radio!!!
---------------------------------------------
On the next "Iowa Talks", Nancy Hagen hosts guests Janette Ryan-Busch,
certified organic farmer from Fae Ridge Farms near Iowa City; Ericka Dana,
organic farmer from Catnip Farm in Iowa County and Patrick O'Malley,
commercial horticultural field specialist from the Iowa State Extension
Office in Johnson County.

With the introduction of anthrax into our society after September 11th, the
subject of mail irradiation has become an important issue. Concerned groups
are scrambling to gather details on how irradiation will not only effect the
safety of postal workers, but how it will affect something as simple as
sending seeds and plant material through the mail.

Special guest: Patty Lovera, senior organizer on food irradiation from the
"Critical Mass Energy & Environment Program", Washington D.C., with
information on food irradiation and what they are just now learning may be
involved with mail irradiation.

Patty will speak to concerns with the company that got the bid, worker
safety, the doses that may be used, FDA proposed rule changes regarding food
irradiation and the lobbying efforts being put forth regarding this issue.

The organization website can be found at http://www.citizen.org/cmep

Aside from this sobering topic, we'll talk about the asian lady beetle
invasion and look at preparing trees and ornamentals for winter. And, as
usual we'll take your comments and questions - on the next Organic Growing
edition of Iowa Talks from your local NPR affiliate, WSUI News.

To call in dial: (319) 466-9100 in Iowa City/Coralville and (866) 780-9100,
