For immediate release: January 7, 2010

BOIL, WATER CONSERVATION ADVISORY ISSUED FOR CITY OF REDFIELD IN DALLAS COUNTY

REDFIELD - The Redfield Water Works had a major water main break in the water system that occurred sometime on January 6, 2010. Due to the potential for bacterial contamination, it is being recommended that the water be boiled before using for drinking or cooking or that an alternative source be used. The city is also asking that customers conserve water use.

The City of Redfield is attempting to locate the break and will be repairing the water main. Due to the current weather conditions they are having trouble locating the break and getting equipment to the city. After the repairs, the city will flush the lines and collect bacteria samples. Additional flushing may need to be conducted. This advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available. The public will be notified when the results are available and the advisory is lifted.

The City is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to resolve the situation.

It is recommended not to drink the water without boiling it first. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes.

General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-4791.

For more information, please contact David Perry of the DNR at 515-250-1798 or Redfield Mayor Darci Alt, at 515-669-1780.
