Confinement risks are heading your way
Ronni Scott, Earlham April 2, 2009

We moved from the city to the country (west of Winterset) for the fresh air and wide-open spaces. Approximately eight months after moving in, a hog-confinement operation was built about 8 miles north of us on the Pitzer Highway. Now another hog-confinement operation is being planned on the same road 1.5 miles south of us.

Owners of the planned confinement are able to slip under the regulatory guidelines of 2,500 pigs by having only 2,480 pigs in one building. Not even a permit is required. There will be no owners living on these premises; the same is true of the confinement north of us.

Thank you,
Dana
