Governor Culver Tours ADM in Cedar Rapids, Pushes for Increased Biofuels

Governor Culver calls on EPA to approve E15

CEDAR RAPIDS - Governor Chet Culver today toured Cedar Rapids' Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) plant, where the nearly completed corn dry mill will be the largest ethanol producing complex in the world when it begins operation later this year. Iowa currently leads the nation in biofuels output. Biofuels generate $2.8 billion in household income in Iowa and $576 million in state tax revenue.

"My goal as Governor is to continue building on our strength in biofuels," Governor Culver said. "By doing so, we can ensure that the new jobs we create will grow new energy industries and in turn, create more jobs that fit our landscape, are permanent, and help retain existing employers."

Two weeks ago, Governor Culver sent a letter to U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asking her to move quickly to approve the use of a 15 percent ethanol blend in American vehicles. Governor Culver again today urged the EPA to approve E15.

"The use of E15 will immediately grow the market for our corn-based ethanol," Governor Culver said. "That EPA decision has been delayed twice, and that's why I think it's so important to focus on ethanol and pressure our federal partners into action."
