EXPECTATIONS OF CONSERVATION INITIATIVE COMMITTEES:

Conservation Initiative Committees are composed of 5-9 volunteers and
assigned staff. Each initiative committee has a workplan including action
objectives and policy outcomes covering the broad issue areas identified by
the Conservation Governance Committee and the Board. They will work with
national committees, chapters, groups and other Club entities to assemble
teams which will develop and implement projects to carry out the elements
of the initiative plan.

The initiative committees are not expected to carry out the projects
themselves. They identify strategic opportunities and then work with the
relevant Sierra Club entities to assemble work teams to put together
winning plans and the resources to carry them out. They then evaluate the
projects that are funded and report back results to the CGC and the Board.

DESCRIPTION OF THE AMERICA'S WILD LEGACY INITIATIVE

This committee works on protection and recovery of threatened native
wildlife species through habitat preservation and restoration and land
acquisitions to reduce fragmentation; new protective designations for all
wild and special places and defense of existing protected areas; reduced
habitat destruction from activities like commercial logging, dams, mining,
abusive recreation, and grazing. Energy impacts on public lands are covered
by the Smart Energy Solutions Conservation Initiative. Urban development
threats to special places are covered by the Safe and Healthy Communities
Conservation Initiative.

Two of the Club's 2006-2007 areas of national concern fall within the
America's Wild Legacy CI: protect wildlife and habitats; and protect wild
and special places; both with an emphasis on building constituencies.
For this Initiative, we are currently seeking political expertise; we are
also seeking volunteers with expertise in endangered species, wildlife and
habitat issues.
