DNR INVESTIGATING ILLEGAL DUMPING, FISH KILL IN COUNCIL BLUFFS

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The DNR is investigating an illegal dumping at a Council Bluffs construction site that caused a fish kill near the Missouri River.

The DNR has found footprints and tracks from a flatbed truck or trailer at the site, located just east of the South Omaha Veterans Memorial Bridge in Council Bluffs. Based on the tracks and their location on the site, DNR investigators believe someone intentionally released diesel fuel or fuel oil from a tank on the truck.

The fuel entered an oxbow area, a previously flooded area that was cutoff from the Missouri River when waters receded. The release has killed an estimated 20,000 minnows and 400 bluegills in the oxbow, but has not reached the river.

The DNR has taken samples and will continue to investigate. A company has been hired to clean the site.

NORTH ENGLISH DISCHARGING WASTEWATER TO LITTLE CREEK

MEDIA CONTACT: Russell Royce, DNR Washington field office, at (319) 653-2135 or [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

NORTH ENGLISH — A broken sewer line in North English is sending untreated wastewater to an Iowa County creek.

The City of North English does not know when the wastewater discharge, located in the southwest part of town, began or how much has reached Little Creek.

The city is repairing the sewer line Wednesday afternoon.
