The U.S. Senate unanimously proclaimed May 11 as Endangered Species 
Day, providing for the first-ever national celebration of Americas 
commitment to protecting our unique wildlife. The Senate resolution 
encourages the people of the United States to become educated about, 
and aware of, threats to species, success stories in species recovery, 
and the opportunity to promote species conservation worldwide. The goal 
of Endangered Species Day is simpleto educate people about the 
importance of protecting our rare, threatened, and endangered animal and 
plant species. Endangered Species Day is a great opportunity for young 
and old alike to learn about our nations wildlife and get involved in 
protecting endangered species and their habitat.

The U.S. Senate has unanimously proclaimed May 11 as Endangered Species 
Day, providing for the first-ever national celebration of Americas 
commitment to protecting our unique wildlife. One reason for the 
nations success in protecting wildlife is the Endangered Species Act 
which has successfully prevented the extinction of hundreds of species, 
including the gray wolf, the grizzly bear and the humpback whale. The 
Endangered Species Act is not only the nations premier wildlife 
conservation law but it also provides an important safety net for 
animals and plants on the brink of extinction.

In every region of the country threatened and endangered species are 
making remarkable progress towards recovery thanks to the ESA. Our 
commitment to protecting rare wildlife ensures that [state-ians] can 
enjoy living side-by-side with the [species] for generations to come.

Endangered Species Day provides an opportunity to learn more about the 
wide variety of actions that we can take to help protect our nations 
wildlife, including building backyard wildlife habitat, protecting water 
quality, and supporting local efforts to clean up rivers, parks, and 
other natural areas.

Protecting Americas wildlife creates a legacy for our children and 
grandchildren, so that all Americans can experience our rich natural 
heritage.
