Iowa Department of Natural ResourcesEnvironmental Services Division For Immediate Release August 28, 2007 TRUCK ACCIDENT LEADS TO DIESEL SPILL IN WASHINGTON COUNTY MEDIA CONTACT: Josh Sobaski or Jim Sievers at (319) 653-2135. AINSWORTH — An accident involving a semitrailer early Tuesday morninghas led to a diesel spill in Washington County. Around 2:00 a.m., the truck ran off Highway 218 about three miles southof Ainsworth. The truck came to rest in Buff Creek, puncturing thetruck’s diesel fuel tanks. Buff Creek flows into Big Slough Creek, which eventually flows into the Iowa River. The diesel fuel tanks are submerged, and it is not known how much fuelhas reached the stream. The two tanks had a capacity of 95 gallonseach. The truck, owned by Landes Trucking of Jacksonville, Ill., was haulinga tanker of coconut oil. The tanker is not leaking. Landes Trucking will offload the tanker and remove the semitrailer fromthe creek and will contact an environmental response company to addressthe fuel in the creek. Some booms and absorbent pads are in place tocontain the spill in the meantime. Writer: Jessie Brown -30-
