Thanks for posting this turtle information, Jane. What a sad situation.
I worked on the freshwater-mussel harvest issue at the Iowa Capitol years
ago. The impression I got back then, after attending a number of committee
meetings, was that if even one Iowan was making a significant profit by
unsustainably harvesting a wild resource, the Iowa Legislature would be very
reluctant to halt the harvest, even though of course some individual legislators
would want to do so.
I hope things have changed since then. I don't know.
