Zach,
For the past two spring breaks, Northwest Iowa has hosted Prairie Rescue Service trips to Hitchcock Nature Center. University of Iowa students clear brush, watch prescribed fires, and learn about efforts to replace Iowa's almost extinct ecosystem, the prairies of the Loess Hills.
As the university begins classes, I urge you to contact and visit with Dr. Jeff Dorale of the Environmental Sciences Dept. Jeff has been the instructor for these service trips and can give you a good run down. Iowa is a little chilier for Spring Break than south Padre Island, but it is a great learning experience. Jim REdmond, Conservation co-chair, Northwest Iowa Sierra Group.
