Sierra Club Celebrates 500 Cool Cities
64 Million Live in Cities Committed
                       to Fight Against Global Warming

This week Tulsa, Oklahoma became the 500th city whose mayor has signed the
U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, a voluntary commitment to reduce
global warming pollution in their communities by 7% below 1990 levels by
2012. There are "Cool Cities" in all 50 states, representing over 64
million people. To help these cities meet the goals and timetable of the
Mayors' Agreement, more than 150 local Sierra Club Cool Cities campaigns
around the country are advocating smart energy solutions such as energy
efficiency, cleaner vehicles and renewable power.

Statement of Glen Brand, Cool Cities Campaign Director

"The over 500 Cool Cities demonstrates the growing national resolve to take
action to solve global warming. Not waiting for the federal government,
Cool City mayors are moving forward today with clean energy solutions such
as energy efficiency, cleaner vehicles and renewable power. These smart
solutions are reducing global warming pollution and energy costs, while
creating new economic opportunities.

"The real leaders on global warming solutions in our country are to be
found in the city halls, not in Washington, DC. Mayors like Seattle's Greg
Nickels, Salt Lake City's Rocky Anderson, and Minneapolis' R.T. Rybak are
showing that clean energy solutions are feasible, cost-effective and
politically popular. It's time for our leaders in Washington to follow the
extraordinary lead of these 500 cities."
