MANURE RELEASE LEADS TO FISH KILL IN CARROLL COUNTY

CARROLL * Manure discharges into Brushy Creek in Carroll County have 
resulted in
a fish kill southwest of Carroll.

A complaint about manure discharging into the creek was reported to the DNR
Friday evening. Since then, DNR environmental specialists have been walking 
the
area around the creek and are currently investigating at least three 
possible
sources of the manure. The fish kill was discovered Monday morning.

Large fish, including catfish and carp, were observed in some open water 
along
the creek. However, most of the creek is frozen and will not allow DNR 
fisheries
staff to conduct a count of dead fish.

DNR staff members are currently collecting samples and doing other testing 
to
determine the sources of the manure. The DNR will be in the area most of the
week working to determine the sources and stop the discharges. Anyone with
information regarding the manure releases should contact the DNR Atlantic 
field
office at (712) 243-1934.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the manure sources are likely from
small open feedlots, said Dan Stipe, supervisor of the Atlantic field 
office.

"This is an opportunity to remind producers that regardless of the size of 
their
animal feeding operation, they still need to meet minimum manure control," 
Stipe
said. "These regulations are in place to protect water quality."

Brushy Creek is a tributary to the South Raccoon River.
