For immediate release: February 17, 2010

WATER ADVISORY LIFTED FOR THE XENIA WATER DISTRICT

DES MOINES – A water advisory for a portion of the Xenia Rural Water District due to high nitrite levels has been lifted.

Residents in a portion of the Xenia Rural Water District north and west of Des Moines had been warned since Friday, Feb. 12th of high nitrite levels and advised not to be providing water from the system to infants under the age of six months.

Water samples collected in the affected area on Tuesday indicated that levels had returned to a safe level.

The nitrite was coming from the conversion of naturally occurring ammonia from the wells.

For more information, please contact Jim Stricker of the DNR at 515-250-9702.
