As the deer activity increases, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like
to remind everyone of some safety tips to avoid deer vehicle collisions. 1.
Remain alert near potential deer crossings. 2. Slow down during dawn and
dusk--high deer travel periods, but remember they can appear at any time.
3. Avoid distracted driving. 4. Drivers should always wear a seat belt and
remain awake, alert and sober. 5. If you see one deer, scan for more. They
travel in groups. 6. Do not veer out of your lane if a deer strike appears
imminent. By “veering for deer,” you may leave the roadway, with the risk
of striking a pole, bridge abutment or other hazard, or into potential
on-coming traffic. 7. If you do hit a deer, move your car off the travel
portion of the road to a safe spot, turn on hazard lights and call into
your local Law Enforcement Agency.
