Northington StreetPrattville, AL 36067 Search Committee Members Mary [log in to unmask]   or [log in to unmask] Box 202045Anchorage, AK  99520 Dolores [log in to unmask] BassettDetroit, MI  42817 David [log in to unmask] Vista BonitaSan Antonio, TX  78216 THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICANTS The Environmental Justice Committee (EJC) is seeking candidates withexperience and/or expertise, plus a strong interest, in the followingareas: civil rights; civil liberties; the environmental justiceimplications of issues such as climate change, toxics, waste,transportation, sprawl, Superfund and wildlands; providing tools andtraining on Environmental Justice and Community Organizing for Chaptersand Groups; and serving as a resource to Club activists working on theClub's conservation issues, political campaigns, and organizationaleffectiveness. Service on the EJC requires a genuine commitment of time and energy.Activists who are already over-committed--as many of our best leadersare--may be asked to give up some of their current commitments in orderto serve effectively as a Committee member.  For a better idea of thework we do, please review the description of EJC below and the list ofqualifications for appointment that precede the application form below. Selection of a minimum of four (4) committee members will be based onseveral criteria, including: (1) enthusiasm for environmental justiceactivism; (2) relevant area of interest and/or expertise; (3) geographiclocation; (4) willingness to work for an integrated program ofenvironmental justice in the Sierra Club; (5) commitment to remainactive on the committee for at least two years; (6) ability tocommunicate effectively orally and electronically; and (7) capacity towork both as part of a team and as an individual activist (whileremaining in contact with the committee for guidance and consent). Appointments to the EJC are made by The Environmental Quality StrategyTeam (EQST, part of the Conservation Governance Committee, CGC), basedon the application and phone interviews with prospective candidates.Interviewers represent the EQST and EJC.  If you are interested insubmitting your name for consideration, please read and follow theinstructions completely. ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE The Sierra Club Environmental Justice Committee (EJC) reports to andadvises the Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST).  The EJC isresponsible for providing support and guidance to Club activists at alllevels who are attempting to deal with environmental justice issues, forencouraging better communication among EJ advocates both inside andoutside of the Club, for helping to shape national Club policies andpositions that have environmental justice implications, for supportingthe work of the Environmental Justice Grassroots Organizing Program(currently, 9 Organizers in 8 areas with Program Director and supportstaff in DC), and for assuring that the Club's historic commitment tothe principles of environmental justice is understood and sustained inall of the Club's endeavors. QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT We encourage people of color, activists of all ages, and both rural andurban activists to apply.  Those that have experience as part of orworking with communities of color and/or economically disadvantagedcommunities are especially encouraged to apply, as are applicants wholive in the central contiguous US or west of the Mississippi River. Our committee seeks those with (1) administrative skills; (2)understanding and experience with environmental litigation; (3) trainingexpertise; (4) organizing expertise; (4) writing experience; (5) desktoppublishing; (6) fundraising as well as other professional experience and(7) chapter and/or national committee Club experience. Use of electronic mail and participation in monthly conference calls(generally in the evening) are required.  EJC and EQST will assist anexceptional candidate who does not have and cannot afford email access.Also, ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences isimportant.  (Transportation and lodging expenses are reimbursed by theEJC.)   In evaluating nominations, the EQST strives to achieve diversity ingeography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections withgrassroots leadership (current or recent-past Chapter or Groupleadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (a demonstratedability to communicate with and motivate people external to Sierra Clubis a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more effectivelywithin the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of activists atall levels (understanding the Sierra Club structure and internalprocesses is a plus).  The Club is a volunteer driven organization; EJCand other committees provide administrative management and guidance forpolicy and other decisions.
