Environment suffers under budget proposal
In the FY02 budget, Republicans cut key clean water programs and important
recreational programs. Included in these cuts are several components of last
year's clean water program that are zeroed out under the Republican
proposal.
Many of the cuts will come from the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund (HF
742). This fund deals with vertical infrastructure which includes the
environmental issues of land acquisition and construction and recreational
trails.
Cuts in environmental programs include:
$60,000 from Natural Resources Volunteer Program
$500,000 from Water Quality Monitoring
$70,000 from Pollutant Discharge Elimination
$20,000 from Floodplain Protection
$3 million from Recreational Grants
$1 million from Recreational Trails
Cuts REAP budget to $10 million; $500,000 below last year
Zeroes out TMDL program ($300,000)
