Thanks, Daryl. You are right about Iowa prairie math, of course -- less
than 1/10th of one percent of the original prairie is left. Using 3/10ths was
wishful thinking on my part.

Speaking of prairies, for anyone interested, help is needed on a field trip
that is aimed at learning and teaching more about prairie remnants that are
threatened by a proposed lake in Madison County. For more information,
please contact Roslea or Laurie per below. (Free lunch!)

June 17 (Saturday), Madison Co., 9:30 AM, Prairies of Madison County (and
free lunch!) - Plan to see scurfy pea in bloom as you tour the prairies and
savannas of Madison Co., and assist the tour leaders as they work to compile a
plant species list for these sites. Meet in Peru: Truro/G-68 exit off I-35, go
W to 4 way stop in Peru, the L on block and R to church parking lot. Contact
Laurie ( [log in to unmask] (mailto:([log in to unmask]) ,
515-967-4167) or Roslea Johnson (515.276.7351) for more info and/or if you?d like to join
the group for lunch.

"The heaviest timber land can be purchased for from $5.00 to $12.00 per
acre. There are black and white walnut, basswood, different kinds of oaks, elms,
etc....Of the fertility of the soil -- it can't be excelled. The prairie is
rolling, a most magnificent sight." (Arden B. Holcomb describing Boone County,
Iowa, in 1855.)
