AMERICANS SPEAK UP FOR YELLOWSTONE
In the most resounding declaration of public concern in the history of
America's National Parks, 350,000 citizens have urged the Park Service to
change its management of winter use in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Four of
five people who commented sought protection of the parks and visitor health
through a phaseout of snowmobile use. The message is clear: Americans want
to breathe clean air, hear nature's sounds, and enjoy wildlife that is
protected, not harassed. But the White House chooses not to listen. Though
it justified the lengthy and expensive reexamination of Yellowstone's
future on the grounds that more public comment would help shape a better
decision, the Administration is now stating publicly that the overwhelming
support for a snowmobile phaseout will not be a major factor in its
decision. Congress and other influential voices are now weighing in as the
Administration shapes its final "preferred alternative" for Yellowstone's
future.
