DUBUQUE, CEDAR RAPIDS REPORT WASTEWATER BYPASSES
MEDIA CONTACT: Tom McCarthy, DNR Manchester field office, at (563) 927-2640 or [log in to unmask]

DUBUQUE — Rapid snowmelt and additional rainfall led to wastewater discharges in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids Monday.

The City of Dubuque reported that about 6,000 gallons of untreated wastewater reached Catfish Creek. The snowmelt and rainfall overwhelmed its sewer system, leading to the discharge at Key Way Drive from 8 p.m. Sunday to midnight Monday and again from 3:00 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. Monday. The DNR is requiring the city to collect water samples.

In Cedar Rapids, the snowmelt and rainfall also overwhelmed that city’s sewer system, leading to untreated wastewater reaching the Cedar River.

The discharges in manholes at 15th St. NW, 13th St. NW and E Ave. NW, and at the intersection of West Post Road NW and E Ave. NW began around 3:15 Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 6,500 gallons of wastewater discharged from the manhole at 15th St. NW. About 105,000 gallons discharged from the 13th St. NW and E Ave. NW location, and an estimated 70,000 gallons discharged from the manhole at West Post Road NW and E Ave. NW.
