URGE OUR SENATORS TO SUPPORT THE CLEAN CAR RESOLUTION -
Vote expected as soon as June 12!

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY AND URGE THEM TO SUPPORT FUEL ECONOMY
STANDARDS BY VOTING FOR THE GORTON-FEINSTEIN-BRYAN CLEAN CAR
RESOLUTION. IT IS TIME TO GET THE ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL CAFE-FREEZE RIDER
OUT OF THE TRANSPORTATION FUNDING BILL!

Senator Harkin said he will vote yes. Call him to support that vote.

Contact Senator Grassley. (Capitol Switchboard: 1-202-224-3121) Urge him
to vote YES.
======================================================

Senators Gorton (R-WA), Feinstein (D-CA) and Bryan (D-NV) are leading the
charge for cleaner cars, SUVs and other light trucks when the Senate takes
up the Department of Transportation (DOT) funding bill in early June. We
expect the vote to take place the week of June 12th.

The House ducked a vote on this anti-environmental rider in May and now it
is time for the Senate to take action. The Gorton-Feinstein-Bryan Clean Car
Resolution will urge the Senate to oppose the House-based CAFE-freeze rider
in the DOT funding bill and support increased fuel economy standards.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY (Capitol Switchboard: 1-202-224-3121) and
urge them to support the Gorton-Feinstein-Bryan Clean Car Resolution. Ask
them to oppose the CAFE-freeze rider in the DOT funding bill and to support
increased fuel economy standards. Raising fuel economy standards will save
consumers money at the pump, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, slash
air pollution and it is the biggest single step we can take to curb global
warming.

Background:
This resolution is in response to the anti-environmental rider that friends
of the auto industry have attached to the DOT funding bill since 1995. This
rider has prevented even a study to increase fuel economy standards and
freezes the standards at current low levels. It is a gag order placed on
DOT and blocks the implementation of the most successful energy policy ever
passed- Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Congress passed
the CAFE law in 1975 as a means to reduce our dependence upon foreign oil.
By doubling the fuel economy of passenger cars, CAFE standards save
three-million barrels per day. But the standard for cars has not changed
in 14 years and the standard for SUVs and other light trucks is only 20.7
mpg and has stagnated for 19 years.

IT IS TIME TO TAKE ACTION AND DEFEAT THIS RIDER!

Senators Gorton, Feinstein and Bryan introduced a Clean Car Resolution in
September 1999. It garnerd the votes of 40 senators thanks to your help!
Momentum is building and the sponsors are geared up to do even better this
year.
