This was sent to me on another list. It's too good not to share. (Mencken did
most of his writing before the mid-20th century, which accounts for what is
now viewed as the sexist use of the pronoun "he" in the quote. At the time, the
masculine forms of pronouns, in English, in contexts such as this, were
considered to denote either masculine or feminine. But you all knew that, didn't
you?)

"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naive and usually
idiotic. He is, more likely, one who loves his country more than the rest of
us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it
debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen
driven to despair." -- H.L. Mencken
