     LIEBERMAN BUILT GREAT ENVIRONMENTAL RECORD

     WASHINGTON: The Sierra Club strongly applauds Vice President Al
     Gore's apparent choice of Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) as his Vice
     Presidential candidate.  Through his 12 years in the U.S. Senate, Sen.

     Lieberman has shown a consistent commitment to protecting the
     environment as a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee.

     "The addition of Senator Lieberman makes a strong environmental ticket

     even stronger -- the most pro-environmental ticket in history," said
     Dr. Robert Cox, President of the Sierra Club.  "Senator Lieberman has
     consistently voted to protect the environment."

     A Gore-Lieberman ticket would stand in stark contrast to the
     Bush-Cheney ticket that has roundly been criticized as one of the
     worst environmental tickets ever.  Polls consistently demonstrate that

     voters of all political persuasions want their public officials to
     protect the environment.

     "Now, more than ever, the choice is clear -- Gore and Lieberman
     provide America's best chance to ensure we can breathe clean air,
     drink clean water and enjoy spectacular wildlands," Cox said.

     On the Senate environment committee, Lieberman helped champion the
     Clean Air Act of 1990, and has since worked diligently to ensure it is

     implemented properly and has fought off efforts to weaken that act.

     "This fall, Americans face a choice between the Clean Air ticket and
     the Dirty Air ticket," Cox continued.  "As a clean air warrior,
     Senator Lieberman has battled to keep dirty air from burning the lungs

     of our children and senior citizens.  When polluting industries wanted

     to weaken clean air health standards, Senator Lieberman stood up and
     said, `Not a chance.'"

     In July, the Sierra Club endorsed Gore for President; in May, the
     group endorsed Lieberman's re-election bid.

     In stark contrast to the GOP platform, which supports drilling for oil

     in the fragile Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Lieberman co-sponsored

     the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Act (S. 867) to designate the
     Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge as wilderness, permanently
     protecting this rich wildlife habitat from destruction.  The Arctic
     Refuge is home to polar bear, musk ox and the 130,000-member Porcupine

     River Caribou Herd.

     Sen. Joseph Lieberman's environmental voting record in Congress,
     according to the League of Conservation Voters:
