BURLINGTON - The city of Burlington is working on Tuesday afternoon to locate a problem with a sewer line that is sending untreated wastewater to the Mississippi River.

A boater reported the discharge to the city, identifying the location as south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad river bridge. The city has identified the problem to be in a sewer line that sends untreated sewage to the city's wastewater treatment facility.

While the city does not know when the discharge began or how much wastewater has entered the river, the pressurized sewer line has an estimated flow rate between 300 and 1,500 gallons per minute.

The city will continue to work to find the cause of the discharge and make repairs. Until repairs are made, people should use caution in the area south of the railroad bridge.

The DNR has requested that the city notify the drinking water supplies in Keokuk and Fort Madison of the discharge.
