OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS

The Sierra Club's Outdoor Activities Governance Committee (OAGC) is seeking
to fill THREE vacancies on the committee.  A fourth vacancy exists which
requires specific expertise in risk management, legal or insurance issues.
For a better idea of the work we do, please review the Job Description
below. Nominees must be current Sierra Club members. We are particularly
interested in achieving greater diversity in one or more areas: age, race,
or gender.

If you are interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions
completely.

Outdoor Activities Governance Committee Job Description
Introduction: OAGC Job Description
The Outdoor Activities Governance Committee (OAGC) is one of six Governance
Committees. OAGC is charged to carry out planning, recommend priorities,
establish and oversee the performance of volunteer subunits and projects,
and work closely with Outings staff.
OAGC provides general oversight and guidance for all outdoor activities
conducted by the Club, particularly locally-sponsored outing programs.  It
also works to assist and encourage the development of outdoor activity
programs, particularly those concerned with promoting the responsible use
of wilderness and wilderness advocacy, and attracting new members.  It is
responsible for ensuring that such programs are carried out in accordance
with all relevant Club policies and goals and that the outing programs are
conducted in a fiscally responsible manner.  This committee coordinates the
work of seven committees (OAC, LOSC, ICO, MAC, MOC, CTL, OATC).

Workload & Job Duties

The following are what can be expected if serving on the OAGC:
1.      Work level varies from member to member and from month to month.
Work level is estimated at 2 to 5 hours per week, in addition to checking
and responding to email regularly.
2.      One hour-long conference call each month.
3.      Travel is estimated at two 3-day weekends to various US locations.
4.      Ability to absorb reasonable expenses not reimbursed by the Sierra
Club (Reasonable lodging and transportation to/from meeting locations are
reimbursed by the Sierra Club; personal expenses, expenses over the allowed
limit, and meals are generally not reimbursed).
The following are typical job duties of OAGC members:

1.    Develop policies to further the mission of the Outdoor Activities
program and the Sierra Club.
2.    Investigate, understand, and resolve issues affecting local Outdoor
Activity programs.
3.    Act as an advocate for the Outdoor Activities program in general and
its policies and initiatives in dealings with local and national Club
entities.

Specific Skill Sets
The following are some skill sets that are desired of an OAGC member.
1.    Sierra Club Member in good standing.
2.    Ability to work as a team member and communication skills.
3.    Maintains general knowledge of Club structure, policies, bylaws
and/or experience in various Club roles.
4.    Previous Sierra Club outing leadership experience.
5.    Currently holds, or recently held, a Sierra Club leadership position,
preferably an entity outing chair.
6.    Currently certified, or recently certified, as an outings leader.
7.    Enthusiasm for and experience with integrating conservation on
outings.
8.    Access to E-mail and the World Wide Web, including basic skills to
use same.
9.    Reasonable access to basic word processing office tools, including
basic skills to use same.
10.   Able to travel to support OAGC activities.
11.   Willing to plan an occasional OAGC meeting.
12.   Ability to review and provide constructive comments to others who are
working on a policy or goal.
13.   Ability to take initiative and follow through on committee work and
accept critique of your committee work.

Membership
OAGC takes into consideration the following factors when filling at-large
vacancies on the committee:
1.      Geographical representation.
2.      Gender and age distribution.
3.      Representation of various Sierra Club outing entities (Inner City
Outings, National Outings, Chapter Outings).
Term of Office
Appointment is a three-year term of office. Members may be reapply to serve
for a maximum of two consecutive terms.
