I find it interesting that this article doesn't mention any of the
pollutants that have grabbed my attention since living here in Iowa.

The Alabama spring air I grew up in smelled like beautiful flowers.
The Iowa spring air I encountered when I moved here smelled like a
chemical factory. All summer long, my neighbors barbecue with lighter
fluid, which wafts in through my open windows and makes itself at home
on my walls and furniture and in my unwilling lungs.

I remember one of our governors saying that one of Iowa's assets was
it's clean air. Everywhere I look people are spraying chemicals over
the ground and the ever-present Iowa winds broadcast them. During the
severe loss of soil during the 70's it was blowing all the way to my
former home in Birmingham, Alabama.

At least 1/5 of an EPA regulated nutrient comes down in the Iowa rain.

Certainly big bad industry is a major problem, but we need to
recognize that we do to each other is equally or perhaps even more
destructive.
