Oil Filter Recycling Legislation Requirements Revised

Des Moines- Iowa law now requires any retailer selling oil filters to accept
used oil filters from customers or post notice of locations for consumer
disposal. This change was a result of the 2008 Iowa Legislative Session.
Individuals or businesses generating or collecting used oil filters from
consumers are now required to separate the filters from other waste for
recycling. This includes all non-household businesses that generate used oil
filters.
"Recycling used oil filters provides a number of benefits to Iowans. Several
ounces of used oil can remain in the filters even after they are drained.
Recycling this used oil removes it from the environment where it could
possibly contaminate our water and land resources. Recycling the steel
filters conserves many natural resources and assists with energy
independence goals", said Tom Anderson, environmental specialist, senior
with the DNR. "Many businesses have been recycling their used oil filters
for some time. This new law will capture thousands of additional gallons of
used oil and thousands of tons of steel for recycling."

The DNR offers resources and information online to help retailers comply
with the new requirements.
