From Iowa Environmental Council:

Have you registered for the Iowa Environmental Council annual conference?

Curtailing Climate Change:
Responsibilities and Opportunities
October 19
Plymouth Congregational Church
4126 Ingersoll Avenue in Des Moines
8:30-4:30

Learn about inventive, practical solutions and tools to create change.
Thomas Alva Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Turning a crisis into an opportunity definitely takes work. But work is an act of empowerment, and empowerment facilitates change. As we work to curtail climate change, opportunities abound. We have the opportunity, through our choices, purchases and civic actions, to use the threat of climate disruption to drive innovative change in energy policy, community planning, finance, housing, transportation use and design, building materials and other commercial products, new businesses and new jobs.

The Iowa Environmental Council's annual conference, Curtailing Climate Change: Responsibilities and Opportunities, will focus on both the specific challenges that global warming poses for Iowans, unique opportunities and responsibilities our state has in creating solutions and cooperating with new partners, and examples of innovative changes taking place in Iowa and across the globe.

You won’t want to miss our keynote speaker, Paul Murray, Director of Environmental Safety and Sustainability at Herman Miller, Inc. As a leading voice for corporate environmental responsibility, Herman Miller has learned enough lessons about “going green” to fill a textbook. Lesson number one: Never doubt the power of one person to create profound organizational change.

The afternoon plenary will provide advocacy skills training so that each participant will leave not only with a greater understanding of solutions to climate change but with the tools to advocate for greater environmental stewardship within communities, governments and corporations. Please plan to spend the day with us.

Registration Materials attached and online at http://www.iaenvironment.org. You can fax in your registration at 515-244-7856.

(On Saturday, October 20, we are also offering a day-long training for folks interested in exercising their civic responsibilities through working with the media, e.g., letters to the editor, volunteering to do television interviews, etc. Call Lynn Laws at 515-244-1194, if you are interested in attending this free training.)

Carbon Footprint
Conference Planning Committee members are making every effort to design a conference with a small carbon footprint.
· We will purchase carbon offsets for speakers flying or driving great distances
· All-Iowa, mostly-local foods will be provided during the conference
· Reusable plates, silverware, and cups will be provided throughout the day
· We will encourage participants to car pool and door prizes will be awarded to participants whose travel to the conference was “driven” by their desire to reduce their carbon emissions (e.g., biked, walked, carpooled).
· The only printed conference materials will be a program, with the day’s agenda and location of breakouts. “Take home” materials will be available on our website.

We invite you to explore with us the responsibilities and opportunities of climate change in Iowa, on October 19, 2007, at our annual conference, in Des Moines.
