Great Lakes United
Habitat Watch - Events
August 6, 1999
Pressure to gut habitat protection is coming from Interior Secretary Bruce
Babbitt who has lost in court more than 30 times to conservation groups for
failing to designate critical habitat. Sec. Babbitt asked Sen. Slade Gorton
(R-WA) to offer an amendment to the Interior Appropriations Bill that would
cut funding for critical habitat of endangered species to only $1 million,
completely gutting the program, reported GREEN 8/2/99
(<http://www.defenders.org/grnhome.html>http://www.defenders.org/grnhome.htm
l)
Earlier this year Sec. Babbitt made an unsuccessful attempt to gut critical
habitat by working with Sen. Domenici (R-NM) to attach a rider to the
Kosovo
Appropriations bill.
Please urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to save species by
identifying
and saving critical habitat. Deadline: August 13, 1999.
