BOIL ORDER ISSUED FOR CITY OF CEDAR RAPIDS

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Cedar Rapids Water Treatment plant has issued a boil
order for City of Cedar Rapids after a six-inch water main was ruptured
during construction.
Water in the trench where the break occurred flowed back into the clear well
that supplies drinking water to the city. The rupture occurred at the J
Avenue plant.
Plant officials were not able to isolate the contaminated water from the
rest of the distribution system. The entire city is on the boil order until
the plant managers can determine the extent of the city that could be
affected.
Residents and businesses should use an alternative source of water or boil
water used for drinking or cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation or any
other purpose involving human consumption until the boil order is lifted.
City water may still be used for bathing.
Boiling destroys disease-causing organisms, which may be in the water. Water
should be brought to a boil, boiled one minute and then allowed to cool
before using. More information on disinfecting water is available on the EPA
Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791. Residents should continue to
boil their water until DNR and the Cedar Rapids Water Treatment plant
officials notify them that water is safe to drink.
The rupture occurred late.Friday morning. The DNR expects the size of the
area affected to be determined and downsized by 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Benton County and the cities of Norway and Van Horne served by Cedar Rapids
are not impacted by this boil order.
