LEAKING STRUCTURE LEADS TO BUTLER COUNTY WASTEWATER DISCHARGE

DUMONT - A leaking storage structure at the Dumont wastewater treatment facility has led to a discharge of partially treated sewage into Hartgrave Creek.

 

Thursday morning, city employees discovered the leak, which is sending wastewater to the Butler County creek at an estimated rate of 43,200 gallons per day.

 

The facility's operators have diverted the wastewater flow from the leaking north lagoon cell to the south cell. They will also pump the contents of the north cell into the south cell to investigate the source of the leak.

 

The city will repair the storage structure when it determines the cause of the leak.

 

The discharge to the creek, a tributary of the West Fork Cedar River, is ongoing. The DNR is requiring the city to take water samples of the discharge and the creek to determine any impact on the creek.
