Enclosed in this month's electric bill from MidAmerican Energy Company was a
notice:
Dear MidAmerican Customer: How would you like to be able to make a
difference? You may already be aware of MidAmerican Energy's plan to build one of the
world's largest land-based wind generation projects in Iowa. This project is
going to be funded by MidAmerican Energy. (this is really a contradiction and
should read, by its customers)
At the same time, Mid American is undertaking an exciting new program that
begins as an offspring of the wind project. MidAmerican's new Renewable
Advantage program relies on our customers who want to help establish Iowa as a leader
in renewable energy production and secure the state's energy future. As a
partner in the Renewable Advantage, you can help bring about the future expansion
of wind energy as well as other renewable energy projects.
Customers can contribute to the program in three ways--with a fixed monthly
contribution or by a one-time or periodic donation."
It goes on to suggest customers pay anywhere from one dollar a month to ten
dollars.
Although I applaud MidAmerican for wanting to expand windpower in Iowa, I
question whether asking customers to help pay for it is the way to go.
There was a comment phone number listed and I called. The person told me that
they were eager to hear customer's comments on the plan and will make a
decision by January as to how they will finance this venture. If you are a
MidAmerican customer, call
them with your comments. Jerry
