Rivers Committee recruitment announcement The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint new members to theSierra Club's Rivers Committee. If you would like to nominate yourselffor appointment please complete and return the application below by March15, 2008. Self-nomination is required. The Rivers Committee operates under the WPST. The Rivers Committee islooking for two volunteers to help advance the Club's work on river-relatedissues and seeks to fill vacancies arising as members who have served sixyears must rotate off for at least a year under Club term limits. The mission of the Sierra Club's Rivers Committee is to provide assistanceto other volunteers in addressing river issues, build networks of activistsworking on these issues, and coordinate the Club's conservation efforts onthese issues. River issues can include, but are not limited to: waterrights, hydropower re-licensing, riparian zone management, riverrestoration, dam removal, dredging, locks, wild and scenic river managementand designation (both state and federal programs), and all related issues. The Rivers Committee works to educate, support, and advise local activistsand others in designing and implementing policies and practices related tothe above issues and promote stewardship and the right of publicinvolvement in river management decisions. In order to carry out these objectives the Rivers Committee pursues thefollowing: 1. Developing an activist network and facilitating information exchangeamong network members. 2. Keeping network members informed on legislation and agency policymatters related to river issues. 3. Helping develop and implement strategy to deal with river issues fromdefensive and proactive positions as appropriate, including raising thevisibility of river issues in the Club. 4. Developing contacts with other environmental and citizen's groupsworking on river issues where such contacts would be helpful to activistsand further the Club's agenda. Committee members need to be able to evaluate issues from a variety ofviewpoints. Committee business is conducted primarily via e-mail andconference calls. The Rivers Committee meets once monthly by conferencecall and annually in person. This committee does or will coordinate with the ongoing work of otherSierra Club entities such as the National Parks Committee, WildlandsCommittee, Canyons of the Colorado River Committee, Water Committee,Southwest Water Committee, Global Warming and Energy Committee, andWildlife and Endangered Species Committee. Candidates for the Rivers Committee should have at least general knowledgeof water management issues and the motivation to work on resolving them.The skills and experience needed cover a number areas including:experience with the Club's planning matrix, knowledge of complex waterissues, dam removal campaigns, hydropower licensing and other energyissues. No member of the Rivers Committee is expected to have expertise inall topics, but specialized expertise is welcome, as is familiarity withSierra Club policies and processes at the national level. Candidatesshould have good management and social skills, as well as political andstrategic judgment, and be current Sierra Club members residing in theUnited States. Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate inconference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as theability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences.
