NO GLOBALIZATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION:
MAKE TRADE CLEAN, GREEN, AND FAIR
We are four weeks away from the largest trade summit ever hosted on
U.S. soil, the Seattle WTO Summit Nov. 30 - Dec. 4. The current rules
of the global trading system trade away our environment by threatening
our hard-earned environmental standards. The Sierra Club's Responsible
Trade program is organizing public education and protest activities in
Seattle and around the country urging President Clinton to fix the WTO
and global trading rules to protect our environment.
There are lots of ways to get involved. Write to your representative.
Write a letter to your local paper. Or send for our action kit and
learn how to hold a "Boston WTeaO Party: No Globalization without
Representation!" To get involved, send an e-mail to
[log in to unmask] or to [log in to unmask] for an
"action kit." (I HAVE ONE EXTRA KIT I CAN FORWARD TO SOMEONE - JC)

November 4, 1999 International Day of Education and Action Against the
WTOs Assault on Forests
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is circulating a Senate sign on letter to
President Clinton opposing the "global free logging agreement" at the
World Trade Organization (WTO). The letter is open for all Senators to
sign!
Tomorrow, on November 4th, please generate calls into our Senators'
offices in Iowa and in Washington, DC. Ask for the Legislative Assistant
who handles the environment. Ask him or her to advise the Senator to sign
Senator Boxer's letter to President Clinton opposing attacks on forests at
the World Trade Organization.
Please call the Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121 -- Ask Our
Senators to Sign the Letter Opposing the "Global Free Logging Agreement" at
the World Trade Organization. **Or call the Capitol Switchboard toll free
at 1-888-449-3511 and ask for our Senators' offices.
On November 4th, forest protection activists from around the world
will join together to let their governments know that they oppose
agreements that benefit multinational timber corporations at the expense
of ancient forests, forest communities and threatened eco-systems.
A primary target for the day is the "global free logging agreement"
(GFLA) at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTOs 135 member
countries are meeting in November to write new international trade and
investment agreements, including the GFLA being spearheaded by the
Clinton Administration. The GFLA could dramatically impact our ability
to protect the world's remaining forests.
The GFLA will lead to forest destruction and the removal of forest
protections by:
(1) rapidly eliminating tariffs on all wood products without putting
necessary environmental protections in place -- this will increase
consumption, production and unsustainable logging; (2) discussing the
elimination of forest protection laws that the WTO considers "non-tariff
trade barriers." Vital forest protection laws that could be eliminated
include: laws to protect forests from invasive pests, recycled content
requirements for office and news paper, eco-labeling and "smart wood"
laws, and bans on the export of raw logs and wood chips.
