Sierra Club Iowa Chapter

Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Saturday, October 5

The Iowa Chapter annual meeting and luncheon will be held Saturday, October

5, at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. Join us for a relaxing day
including

lunch, a program and opportunities for hiking before or after the planned

program. Spend the day with fellow Sierra Club members and guests in this

beautiful landscape of rolling hills, prairie and savanna restoration near
Prairie

City.

Doors open at the Refuge at 9 a.m. and registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

A guided hike will begin at 10 a.m., lunch will be served at noon and the

speaker's presentation will follow.

Building a sustainable agriculture in Iowa and beyond

Dr. Lisa Schulte Moore will be the featured speaker at the luncheon. She

studies the causes, consequences, and design of land-use change. Several of

her current research projects address ecological, technological, and social

innovations to enable agricultural landscapes to meet multiple societal
goals.

Dr. Schulte Moore will address Iowa's status as a leading producer of corn,

soy, pork and eggs and first-in-the-nation caucuses, which means the state

has disproportionate influence on US farm bills. Such leadership also comes

with responsibility, including the responsibility to address sustainability

concerns for present and future generations. Learn about on-going efforts in

which Iowans are providing positive leadership in agricultural
sustainability

through perennials, partnerships and alternative models of prosperity.

The program will also include a tour of the STRIPS Project (Science-based

Trials of Row Crops Integrated with Prairie Strips) that has been conducted
at

the Refuge.
