USFWS STANDS UP FOR IMPERILED SPECIES: The Army Corps
of Engineers has
been told that it cannot move the nests of ESA
protected piping plovers
and least terns from sandbars on the Missouri River so
that water
levels can be raised to accommodate barge traffic says
the N.Y. Times, AP
7/6. The Corps responded that companies are already
“complaining that
their barges are bumping the bottom of the river” and
noted its “concern
that we’re going to have an oil spill down in the
river,” even as it
allowed barge traffic to continue as usual.
