Mission Statement and goals of the Sustainable Consumption Committee:
The Sierra Club's Sustainable Consumption Committee was formed to educate
club members and others on the relations between individual, household, and
institutional consumption of natural resources and larger environmental
problems. At present, we have a primary focus on three issues: forest
products, agriculture and food, and energy use. We believe that consumption
must be addressed as an integral aspect of our efforts to preserve
wilderness, to protect human and nonhuman health, and to create sustainable
and human communities. The committee's priorities are to educate
environmental activists and others about consumption issues, to work with
other Sierra Club programs and campaigns, and to provide support for club
activists working on consumption issues in their local communities. We
also work closely with other organizations concerned about the link between
consumption and environmental destruction.
Desirable Qualifications of Committee Members
1. Knowledge of and interest in the relations between consumption and
environmental problems, particularly related to wood and paper products,
energy use in homes and transportation, and food and agriculture.
2. Understanding of the Sierra Club's overall mission and approach to
environmental problems and experience with the Club's chapter and/or group
structure. Experience with national club campaigns and programs is also
very helpful.
3. Willingness and ability to work cooperatively with people holding
differing perspectives on the best strategies for the Club to follow.
4. Sufficient flexibility in time commitments to allow full participation
in this committee.
We invite applicants from all parts of the country, and especially those
with strong local connections and experience, and those with expertise in
our target issue areas (food and agriculture, forest products, and energy).
Responsibilities and tasks:
1. Participate in monthly conference calls.
2. Take on additional tasks such as the production of our newsletter and
educational materials, website improvement, liaison work with other groups
working on consumption-related issues, or support for local Sierra Club
groups.
3. Attend occasional (no more than yearly) meetings. (Travel costs will
be reimbursed.)
4. Work collaboratively with other Sierra Club campaigns and programs on
consumption-related dimensions of their target issues.
