THE WORK OF THE WPST: The WPST currently oversees the work of seven
committees:
Marine, Recreation Issues, Wildlife and Endangered Species, Rivers,
Grazing, Forest Certification and State and Private Forests.
Current members of the WPST are: Caroline Pufalt (chair) Dick
Worthen(budget manager) Sharon Stepehns, Jerry Sutherland, Paul Wilson,
Carolyn Carr, and Mike Prather. Staff liaison is Jessica Hodges and CGC
liaison is Nick Aumen. In 2003 we will loose Paul Wilson, Carolyn Carr and
Mike Prather due to tenure limitations and another commitments.
The WPST welcomes applications from any Sierran interested in serving on a
national level committee that deals with public lands, biodiversity, marine
and other natural resource issues. These issues are at the core if the
Club's mission. Our continiuing 2003 membership hails from the states of
Missouri, Illinios, Minnesota and Oregon. Thus we are especially interested
in applicants from regions not already represented in our membership.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR STRATEGY TEAM MEMBERS
Strategy Teams have from 5 to 9 members. The volunteer leaders on each
strategy team should have broad knowledge and familiarity with many, if
not all, of the issues for which that strategy team is responsible, have
campaign experience, have good political judgment and some demonstrated
management and people skills. Members of strategy teams should not
advocate for one "pet" issue, nor represent one narrow issue focus, but be
able to evaluate and establish priorities among all the competing demands
in the core issue fairly. Strategy team members need to be willing to work
on conservation and administrative matters.
CHARGE TO STRATEGY TEAMS
1. Coordinate core conservation work, determining the best ways to address
both priority and non priority issues that are the responsibility of the
team.
2. Set issue work priorities and shift resources to reflect changing
needs.
3. Create (and sunset) and fund committees, projects, working groups, and
task forces to achieve the Club's conservation goals.
4. Educate, organize and support activist members.
5. Review the work of entities under the team and recommend budgets to the
CGC.
STRATEGY TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES
WPST "jurisdiction" - National and International protected areas ( parks,
wilderness, wild rivers etc.) biodiversity, wildlife, endangered species,
public and private lands management issues ( such as forestry, grazing)
watershed management, coastal and marine management, restoration issues,
and Native American religious/holy sites. These issues at times overlap
with
the work of other strategy teams and in those cases strategy
teams should coordinate and/or assign responsibility.
