MONTPELIER – A power loss at a lift station resulted in untreated wastewater entering a creek that flows into the Mississippi River.

The release was reported to the DNR on Tuesday morning. It occurred at the SSAB North American Division plant, a steel manufacturing plant north of Montpelier, where about 5,000 gallons of wastewater entered a ravine starting Sunday evening.

Plant workers restored operations at the lift station Monday about 9 p.m.

The DNR is requiring SSAB North American Division to take water samples, clean up solids and revise the operating procedures on lift stations.

ANAMOSA – The city of Anamosa reported to the DNR that they had repaired a large generator and all processes, including disinfection, were back in operation before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

No wastewater was released into the Wapsipinicon River, because plant officials pumped all untreated wastewater back into the plant while repairing the generator.

Plant processes were interrupted Tuesday morning when the large emergency generator broke down.
